Microsoft delays WinFS even more

WinFS is perhaps one of the most awaited feature from the Microsoft stable after Longhorn was announced. Microsoft says that it has been their dream to come out with something like WinFS and completely change the way file system works. They are working hard on it. Just that it is taking longer than initially expected.

WinFS has already been delayed a lot. Initially planned to be included with Longhorn Desktop release in 2006, it was later moved to Longhorn Server release. The latest news is that it will not make it to the Longhorn Server release as well. Reports now put the release date to be close to 2008.

Senior Vice President of the Windows Server Division, Bob Muglia had this to say: “We’ve been working on this for a long time, and this team is going to deliver. Our mistake, frankly–and it was a mistake–was to go out and talk about it before we really had clarity as to how we would be able to deliver it and all the complexities there.”

Looks like Microsoft needs to take care a bit more on what they promise to the developers. Raising expectations and then delaying stuff will not help their cause anyhow. Maybe Linux can capitalize on these delays to get more of Microsoft’s territory with exciting releases in the meantime.
