Wal-Mart now selling Skype Internet phones

Retailing giant Wal-Mart has announced that they are now selling Skype’s Internet Phones in their retail stores around the country.

In addition to Skype handsets, Wal-Mart would also be selling webcams and other gear from Skype which is the dominating player in the VoIP software market.

These products would be available in more than 1,800 Wal-Mart stores starting Monday.

Don Albert, vice president of Skype’s North American operations said in a statement on this announcement: “This brings Internet communications to the masses. This relationship is an acknowledgment that Skype has arrived in the mainstream.”

the company would also be marketing a prepaid calling card for Skype in the USA. This card would offer unlimited calling in the USA and Canada for three months for $8.85. Skype said that they developed this card specifically for the customers of Wal-Mart.

Albert said: “This makes it very affordable for a Wal-Mart consumer who may not have tried Skype to give it a try.”

he added that Skype is not positioning itself as a replacement for traditional phones. They currently have no plans to offer E-911 services in the country.
