Sony PlayStation Portable is out

Sony’s PlayStation console has been so popular that it feels strange that PSP is their first attempt at the handheld gaming market. Nevertheless, it sure looks good enough to take Nintendo’s DS gaming device heads on.

The PSP gaming machine is finally out in the market in Japan with Sony shipping around 20,000 devices for the launch. The target however is to sell around three millions of these units by the end of the financial year in March 2005.

Nintendo expecting competition from the Sony’s PSP have already planned to increase their shipment by around 40%. Their strategy with DS has worked, as it has been quiet a hit since the launch.

They have the advantage of long experience in selling handhelds, while this market is brand new for Sony. The competition between the two giants would be interesting to watch. While Sony concentrates on complex games, Nintendo believes the strategy with DS lies with simple but addictive games and applications. They want to reach out to the youth who dislike playing complicated games on consoles.

Sony however has the advantage in a sense that PSP can run movies and play digital audio and comes with wireless LAN capabilities.

it’d be even better if it played ps2 discs, rather than having to buy new software for it, huh. and i thought that it didn’t play movies. do you have to buy special psp format movies, or will it play dvd?

The DVD disk is bigger than the system and moving a small disk takes up far less battery then a large disk. Sony is trying to get movie disks out but you can run them off the memory stick. I would rather have had it uce SD.
