AMD and IBM develops new technology for processors
AMD and IBM in collaboration have developed a new technology that can lead to massive increase in processor power. They call it strained silicon transistor and tests have shown it resulted in a 24% increase in performance.
The developed transistor is reported to be compatible with silicon-on-insulator (SOI) technology and can take care of electrical leakage and inefficient switching. This helps in preventing transistor scaling and increased transistor frequency.
AMD expect to deliver chips based on this technology soon to the customers to offer them better value for their money. Their plans are to incorporate this into all of their 90 nm processor platforms and more and release them in the first half of next year.
IBM has similar plans. Let us see what Intel responds with.
