YouTube unhappy with Pentagon’s ban

US Department of Defense recently announced their decision to block certain web services on their network to prevent the soldiers from choking the servers by downloading bandwidth intensive data.

The blocked services included Google owned video sharing site YouTube. YouTube’s co-founders have criticized the move saying: “They said it might be a bandwidth issue, but they created the Internet, so I don’t know what the problem is.”

YouTube representative added in a statement that they are currently trying to work with the Pentagon hoping to get the ban reversed. YouTube spokeswoman Julie Supan added: “We’d like to explore what’s at issue here and talk about what we can do to sort out what’s the issue here.”

market analysts too had criticized the move saying that these services help the soldiers fighting overseas like in Iraq to stay in touch with their families.

Defense Information Systems Agency Vice Director Rear Adm. Elizabeth Hight clarified in a statement that the block is primarily driven by concerns about bandwidth.

Interestingly, the US military itself had recently launched their own channel on the YouTube service named “boots-on-the-ground”.

YouTube added that they are ready to work with Pentagon to install controls on what type of content would be available to the soldiers.
