Ritek to soon start mass production of BD-RE & HD DVD-RE media

Taiwanese company Ritek has said in a statement that they plan to start mass producing BD-RE (Blu-Ray Disc Rewritable) discs as well as HD DVD-RE (high definition) discs in the third quarter of this year.

This could result in the market price of this media to get affordable for the end user.

Market analysts say that the disc manufacturing market is currently dominated by a couple of manufacturers based in Taiwan.

These are the manufacturers who license disc technology from developers and then mass product the discs to drive the price down in the market.

A company representative however said that the BD-RE and HD DVD-RE discs will continue to remain pricey in the near future. It would need more players to start manufacturing these discs to enhance the competition.

Ritek’s main rival in the market is CMC Magnetics.
