Intel aims to remove lead from all their processors

Microprocessor industry giant Intel has said that they are aiming to remove lead from all their chips in the future.

The company has been pretty successful with this measure as they have already managed to remove about 95 percent of the material used in their chips since 2004.

Intel still uses a little amount (around 0.02 grams) of lead in their chips and this too would be removed with a new line of chips that go into production later this year.

Intel said that the tin/lead based solder used to connect the processor to the motherboard will be replaced with an alloy comprised instead of tin, silver and copper.

Nasser Grayeli, Intel’s director of assembly test technology development in the Technology and Manufacturing Group spoke on this ambition: “Intel is taking an aggressive stance toward environmental sustainability.”

Intel’s rival in the microprocessor market AMD too has said that they are also working on removing lead from their chips.
