EarthLink would develop the Philadelphia Wi-Fi network
Wireless Philadelphia is a nonprofit group formed by the city of Philadelphia. It has now approved the 15-square-mile Wi-Fi test network built by EarthLink.
This would allow EarthLink to now go ahead with their plans to finish building out a 135-square-mile network covering the city.
However, this approval has come just weeks after the company revealed that they now aim to scale back its city Wi-Fi initiative.
Philadelphia users can already use the test network developed by EarthLink in the city. The entire network is expected to be ready for use by the third quarter of the year.
EarthLink is taking the responsibility of financing, building, and managing the network. They would be sharing the revenues generated from this network with the Wireless Philadelphia.
