Nokia suggests that patent battle with Qualcomm would hurt uptake of 3G technology
World’s largest mobile phone maker is entangled in a legal battle with the tech company Qualcomm which is the force behind the CDMA mobile standard.
The two companies have filed several lawsuits against each other related to patent infringement.
Nokia has now said in a statement that they are afraid that these patent related battles would hurt the uptake of 3G technologies worldwide.
Nokia’s Chief Technology Officer Tero Ojanpera added that the company is now focusing on 3G mobile phones on higher-end models. In comparison, their rivals are expanding their range of low cost devices with high-speed wireless service capabilities.
Ojanpera added about their ongoing talks with Qualcomm: “We are in negotiations but there’s no agreement.”
He further said: “This whole discussion might have an impact on 3G technology.”
Nokia’s basic logic is that the fight between them and Qualcomm is resulting in rival technologies like Mobile WiMax getting wide acceptance around the world.
Ojanpera finally added about their long term plans: “We are addressing the emerging markets and that’s where the next billion users is coming, but those are lower-priced phones with maybe not that many capabilities at the beginning.”
