Apple launches iTunes U

Apple has just launched the Apple iTunes Plus service to enable their customers get access to the DRM free music they are making available in partnership with EMI.

The company has also launched iTunes U as a dedicated area within the iTunes Store. This new section on their digital media store offers free content from top U.S. colleges and universities.

Apple is working with top educational institutions including Stanford University, U.C. Berkeley, Duke and MIT for this new service.

Chris Bell, Apple’s director of worldwide marketing for iTunes spoke about this new initiative: “It’s just an amazing way for lifelong learners to get more material. This really opens up the world of digital education.”

Apple added that iTunes U would get a hosted content management system for colleges and university to more easily post audio and video content online.

Students would get access to this section and would be able to load the media on their iPods
