Garmin Communicator Plugin API: Garmin International becomes developer friendly
Garmin International has announced their decision to support third party development in some ways.
The company has now published some APIs for connecting to its GPS devices. This would enable third party developers to connect to their system to see where the customers are located at a given time.
These new plugins are named Garmin Communicator Plugin API and it would allow the developers to transfer information about a user’s location between a Garmin GPS device and a Web site.
Garmin is hoping that these APIs would interest the developers and a lot of third party services and products would make use of it.
The aim is to make the service more usable for the end customer considering Garmin faces a lot of potential competition from new players entering the market.
Several mobile phone makers are including GPS capabilities in their mobile phones and the day could not be far off when people would have no reason to buy a separate GPS device.
Garmin has also made available a Content Toolkit, for creating services that send information about “points of interest”.
