Google acquiring Spain based web service Panoramio

Search engine giant Google has revealed their latest acquisition deal. Google has announced that they are acquiring the photo-sharing Web site based in Spain .

Panoramio service enables the web users to upload photos and identify where they were taken by placing them on Google Earth or Google Maps. These can then be viewed by other people.

Incidentally, the two companies have been working together since sometime. Google just recently made Panoramio the default photo layer for Google Earth. This helped the company gain massive amount of user submissions.

Google added in a statement that the acquisition would enable them to integrate its services more closely with its own. This would also help them boost their expertise in this segment of the market. Users would benefit as Panoramio would get Google’s technical infrastructure.

Panoramio as a service was launched in October 2005 and they just recently released an API to enable their functionality on third party services.
