miCard chosen as the new global memory card standard

Industrial Technology Research Institute has revealed that they have produced a new global memory card standard, the miCard.

The miCard has been designed to be used in smaller consumer gadgets such as digital cameras, mobile phones. It would also work with any device with a USB (Universal Serial Bus) plug. This makes it totally compatible with personal computers.

MultiMedia Card Association (MMCA) has approved this card and it is likely to be made available in the markets around the world by the third quarter of the year.

The developers claim that the card will transfer data at 480Mbps, and throughput will improve over time. The initial production units would be of 8GB capacity and future versions would be able to touch the capacities of around 2,048GB.

As many as 12 Taiwanese companies have already signed up to manufacture the miCard. And several companies have said that they are going to support this new standard. These include: Asustek Computer, BenQ, Carry Computer Eng. Co., C-One Technology, DBTel, Power Digital Card Co., and RiCHIP.
