Reva could face problems with exports to the UK market
Reva is the pride of India when it comes to export markets. It is the only electric car being manufactured in the Indian market which is also being exported to United Kingdom.
The car company might now face issues from the UK government which has now applied revised safety norms proposed by the UK Department of Transport.
Reva makers have already sold 2,000 units of the electric car which they sell as the G-Wiz in the UK market.
The latest EU norms puts the Reva car into the category called quadricycle. Expert Dr Stephen Ladyman had more information: “The safety regulations that govern this type (quadricycle) of vehicle were designed at a time when it was thought they would cover four-wheeled motorcycles and some small, specialized commercial vehicles. Not city runabouts that resemble small cars.”
He added: “But, due to increasing environmental concerns, new vehicles that qualify as quadricycles have come to the market and are becoming more popular for urban use. Therefore, it is right that we reconsider the regulations for this type of vehicle and make safety regulations more stringent.”
The UK Department of Transport is currently conducting more tests on the Reva car to see if they would be able to run on the UK streets.
Chetan Kumaar Maini, deputy chairman and CTO, Reva Electric Car Company had this to say on this new development: “The UK government issued a statement that following the increase in popularity of quadricycles in the UK, it is seeking a review of legislation with the European Commission. The UK government has not asked for a ban of G-Wiz (Reva) or quadricycles. It is to test at least one other quadricycle shortly and then to issue a report.”

The Reva/G-Wiz has all the safety integrity of a biscuit tin. I would no soon wish to see my loved ones driving one on the public highway, at risk of being wiped-out by a truck or fast moving car, than see them take-up free-climbing on Mount Everest. There is more to building and selling cars than just building and selling cars. Modern cars produced by the leading mainstream manufacturers are an evolution. New models conception and design is the culmination of, say in the case of Ford or Mercedes-Benz, 100 years plus experience. This cannot be replicated by manufacturers who obviously care so little about their customers personal survival expectation in a serious accident nor by manufacturers who care so little about their own commercial longevity in the market place - the vehicle is about to earn Reva a damming reputation in the UK (lucky they are hiding behind the pseudonym of G-Wiz in that market).
With very low running costs, exemptions from congestion tax and parking fees, it’s true that G-Wiz is becoming more and more popular. G-Wiz had received green signal from EU, which means its safe as a quadricycle.
They are not replicas of a car. They have a brand and a purpose of their own. Just the way we accept a bike as a bike, we should also accept quadricycle for what it is. But the funny thing is we now expect it to be like a car!!. We should understand that they are not designed for long drives and family outing. The maximum speed one can drive within the city limit is less than 25 mph. The crash test could be a message to all quadricycle owners that they need to be a bit careful and they should handle it responsibly. I think G-Wiz does not fall short of any thing; It’s used for short distance within city. It’s not a ‘car’. Why create such unnecessary hype! Just use it for city needs and follow the city limits. Guess its all about that.
