Toshiba SD-L912A: HD DVD rewriter for notebooks!
Japanese electronics maker Toshiba has announced that they have developed a HD DVD rewriter product small enough to be usable on notebook computers.
This product is codenamed Toshiba SD-L912A and they would showcase it at the upcoming Computex trade show.
Toshiba added that the drive can read and rewrite to single and dual-layer HD DVD-RW discs. It can also read and write to recordable HD DVD, DVD, and CD media.
Toshiba plans to start shipments of these new drives starting next month and we expect to see them preloaded on notebook machines delivered by the major PC vendors around the world.
The company also confirmed that the drive is compliant with the European Union Restriction of the Use of Certain Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment Regulations (ROHS) directive.
They are going to market the drive directly to system builders instead of selling them in the retail market for the time being.
