Intel takes control of Itanium from HP
Hewlett-Packard has decided to end their efforts on active development of the Itanium chip, which is in the making for a decade now. Intel now takes over the 300-strong Itanium development team who has been working hard on the processor in Colorado. The idea about the development was Intel’s but reports say that HP’s contribution has complicated the process, which in the end resulted in unwanted delays.
This decision from HP would save around USD100 millions for them. They would now focus their development efforts on system and software design and help developers to port their applications to their platform. The two companies would also now highlight Itanium processor as an alternative of RISC chips that are developed by IBM and Sun Microsystems.
The companies have not released any information about the latest terms but HP has planned to continue their spending on the development of the chip. Carly Fiorina, HP chairman, and chief executive had this to say about this news: “As HP and Intel continue to invest in server innovation and Itanium, Integrity servers become a ‘must have’ competitive weapon to drive customer value for the next decade and beyond.”
