Asus 3ePC: The $189 laptop
We have already seen the much talked about OLPC’s USD 100 laptop which currently costs a bit more than that.
Now, Asus has developed a potential challenger to the machine which has been primarily designed for children in developing nations.
Asus chairman Jonney Shih showcased the device at the Intel’s Computex keynote. Asus added that the device measures roughly 120 x 100 x 30mm (WDH) and weighs only 900 gram.
Asus 3ePC has been powered with a customized version of Linux operating system and the user interface has been designed to make it look similar to Windows OS.
The company further confirmed that the computer would ship with an office productivity suite. Asus is planning to make the 3ePC available in all the major markets around the world.
The base model seems to be loaded with a 2 GB flash memory hard disk. It’s not however clear on how much space would be left for the user after the preloaded softwares are installed.
