Hollywood opposing Apple’s movie rental plans

Apple is rumored to be in talks with movie studios in the United States to start a movie rental service just in time as they are going to launch the iPhone later this month.

The aim is to enable the users to rent a movie for a specific period at a low cost enabling them to load the movie on portable devices so they can check it out while on the move.

The latest reports in the media states that the Hollywood studios are opposing these plans as they fear that a service like this could boost piracy.

None of the involved parties have commented about the rumored ongoing talks.

Media sources have quoted people familiar with these discussions. They are saying that the problem is specifically due to the fact that Apple is not going to modify their software application to prevent pirated media from being uploaded to their portable devices.

Movie studios also do not like the strict pricing structure preferred by Apple. We already know that the music companies wants variable pricing on the Apple iTunes store whereas Steve Jobs has said that consumer wants simplicity in pricing.
