Flickr said to be blocked in China!

Yahoo’s Hong Kong unit has said in a statement that their Flickr web service is apparently blocked by the government in the Chinese market.

Flickr is one of the most popular photo hosting and sharing service on the web today and it is owned by Yahoo!

Market sources said that the service was apparently blocked after images of the Tiananmen massacre in early June 1989 were posted on the service.

A Yahoo spokesperson said on this: “It is our understanding that Flickr users in China are not able to see images on Flickr, and we have confirmed that this is not a technical issue on our end. It appears that the Chinese government is restricting access to Flickr, although we have not received confirmation from them. We are currently investigating this issue and hope that it is only a temporary one.”

Yahoo further said that they are considering plans to further internationalize the Flickr service by creating versions in seven major languages besides English. This is intended to include a version for Chinese users.
