Linux based laptop for USD 498 from Walmart.com

World biggest chain of supermarket Walmart.com did it again. They have broken the price barrier for laptops with their offering of a Linux based portable machine for just USD 498! The laptop comes with an Operating System and a functional office suite. The system is being offered under the brand name of Balance computer and they have released it in collaboration with the much in news Linux Company, Linspire Inc.

The laptop is very usable out of the box. It is powered with a VIA C3 1.0 GHz processor and comes with a 14.1 inch screen. The systems also come equipped with basic security features like firewall and web applications from Mozilla Foundation. Firefox is being offered as the primary web browser.

It comes preinstalled with basic applications like word processor, spreadsheets, presentation tools and of course a mail client. Walmart.com is using OpenOffice.org’s OpenOffice software suite for these functionalities. These applications are compatible with Windows based MS Office Suite thus there are no issues with compatibility.

Walmart.com is already selling this Laptop on the net itself and buyers would not need any coupons or rebates to get the offered price.

Why $498? With India now making a mobile computer for $220, why can’t Wal-Mart, with its purchasing volume and marketing skill and clout do the same? When will we have a truely inexpensive commodity computer from Wal-Mart selling for around $200??
