Sony Concentrating on LCDs and Rear-Projection Television Sets
Sony, one of the world’s largest producers of consumer electronics good is concentrating their television manufacturing business on liquid-crystal displays and rear-projection television sets. The company however will not stop making the plasma display sets for now. They informed the media personals on Monday.
They have recently tied up with another electronics giant Samsung Electronics of South Korea for improving their LCD TV operations. Sony has an estimated projection of selling 11.4 million TV sets in the current year, which ends in March 2005. However, Plasma television makes a very small part of this huge number.
They have no manufacturing of the plasma displays of their own but assemble them in their plants. They sold approximately 300,000 of these plasma display sets last year. Sony had to clarify their stand on Plasma Set manufacturing after Japan’s top business daily, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun caused sensation by reporting that they were planning to leave it in 2005.
