MMRDA against Tata’s upcoming Rs. 1 lakh car
The market is eagerly waiting for the Tata’s upcoming Rs. 1 lakh car which is scheduled for launch sometime next year.
However, there is at least on organization which is not excited about this news. T Chandrashekhar, who heads the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has said in a statement that they believe that the car would become a menace for the Mumbai city if it is allowed to be sold in the region.
He said that the city would not be able to taste the fruits of its infrastructure investments unless it rations the use of road space and private vehicles.
Chandrashekhar said in his statement: “The Tata car cannot be permitted (into the city) as it would choke up Mumbai. The low cost would mean that all those who can afford bikes will jump into the car segment. Then, no road space will be enough to hold the sea of vehicles. The city will be doomed.”
He added: “Today, people are buying vehicles like they purchase chocolates. Only those citizens who have parking space must be allowed to buy cars. There should be a fixed quota of new vehicles sold in Mumbai. And like London and Paris, the city must levy a congestion tax to de-clog the roads.”
Market analysts have said that the Rs. 1 lakh car would make it easier for a lot more people to buy cars and this is likely to cause more congestion in the cities across the country.
