Reva Electric Car could develop a rival to Tata’s Rs. 1 lakh car

Indian automotive company Tata Motors are working on their ambitious project on launching the Rs. 1 lakh car in the Indian market sometime next year.

The company is expected to face little competition in this new segment of the market considering few other players have the capacity to develop a car so cheap.

However, Reva Electric Car Company could possibly become one of the primary rivals to Tata’s Rs. 1 lakh car as they are working on their own cheap small car.

This car is expected to be placed just below the existing Maruti 800 car in the Indian market.

Reva Electric Car Company’s deputy chairman Chetan Maini had this to say on their plans: “We have no concrete plans to enter the Rs 1-lakh car segment in the immediate future . However, the Rs 1-lakh car segment has a huge potential and we see electric vehicles being developed for the segment in the next five years.”

He added: “Reva’s top speed is 80 km/hr. The new product, which is expected to compete in the Rs 1-lakh segment , would have a higher top speed, which could be around 100-120 km/hr. The car is slated to be launched in 2010.”
