European Commission now backing Nokia DVB-H technology for Mobile TV
The European Union has now given its backing to the Nokia’s DVB-H technology to promote mobile television services in the region.
The commission said that they need to settle on a single standard for TV broadcasts to cell phones.
They are now planning to look at ways to mandate its use.
An EU official said in a statement: “DVB-H technology is the strongest contender for future mobile TV, with successful commercial launches and trials in 18 European countries, and increasingly worldwide.”
EU Telecoms Commissioner Viviane Reding added: “Europe is today at a crossroads. We can either take the lead globally — as we did for mobile telephony based on the GSM standard developed by the European industry — or allow other regions take the lion’s share of the promising mobile TV market. Wait-and-see’ is not an option.”
