Wal-Mart now offering Everex Impact GC3502 with open source applications on Vista OS
US based retailing giant Wal-Mart has announced that they are now selling a cheap desktop machine from Everex. The product name is Everex Impact GC3502.
The machine costs just around USD 298 and comes powered with the Microsoft Vista operating system.
Everex Impact GC3502 saves money for the consumer as it comes loaded with the free office suite OpenOffice 2.2.
It is powered by the cheap 1.5GHz C7-D processor from Via Technologies. This processor from Via meets lead-free environmental regulations and saves energy with low wattage demands.
However, this computer product lacks the display unit which the customer would have to purchase extra in case he does not have one already.
Eugene Chang, a product manager at Everex said in a statement that they expect to lure in a lot of buyers with their simple approach of developing machines which does not come preinstalled with crapware from third party companies. Interestingly, Dell is also taking somewhat of a similar approach with some of their products.

About

Yet, as of Aug. 11, 2007 - the Everex 3502 is still not listed on the Walmart website. :( Also, the 3502 only comes with 1GB or RAM, so be prepared to shell out an additional $50 or so for an additional 1GB - so M$’s Vista/BloatOS can actually (barely) function. Realistically. you’ll probably want at least 4GB of memory for Vista, and the 3502 can only take 2GB, so . . . OTOH, the 3502 will run Ubuntu Linux with 1 GB of memory and be perfectly happy with it. Personally, I’d rather run Linux than the bloated POS Vista.
