Verizon Wireless would be able to offer Qualcomm powered mobile phones

Verizon Wireless has said in a statement that they have signed on a deal with Broadcom which would allow them to continue offering phones powered with banned Qualcomm technology in the US market.

This would let them avoid the ban on imports of phones which infringed upon Broadcom’s patented technologies.

Incidentally, the same company had earlier sided with Qualcomm demanding that the decision taken by the U.S. International Trade Commission by overturned.

Verizon Wireless said that they would now be paying USD 6 for every infringing mobile phone that is sold in the US market.

However, this fee is limited to $40 million a quarter and would not exceed $200 million over the life of the agreement.

Nancy Stark, a spokeswoman for Verizon Wireless said in a statement: “We wanted to put this behind us and wanted certainty for our customers and our business. We have new models coming out all the time.”
