Mass production of the USD 100 laptop begins
It has taken five years but the mass production of the USD 100 laptops for the OLPC project has finally begun.
The manufacturers of these machines have now been given the green light to start the manufacturing for these machines.
The OLPC project had earlier said that they needed confirmed orders for at least 3 million machines to start the mass manufacturing process.
They are now expecting to deliver the first of these machines to targeted school kids starting October this year.
Walter Bender, head of software development at One Laptop per Child (OLPC) added in a statement: “There’s still some software to write, but this is a big step for us.”
The laptop has been designed to be rugged, features a water proof casing and is as energy efficient as they could have been.
The final designed brings together around 800 parts from multiple suppliers. AMD is going to supply the processor for this machine which would run a variant of the Linux operating system.
