Toshiba, Fujitsu and NEC Electronics could jointly develop chips
Japanese companies Toshiba, Fujitsu and NEC Electronics are currently in talks with each other to decide on a new venture to develop chips.
The three companies are currently discussing possible plans to jointly develop advanced 32-nanometer chips to better keep up with rivals.
These chips could be used in electronic devices like flat TVs and other high-power home electronics as early as 2010.
Macquarie analyst Yoshihiro Shimada had this to say on this report: “This is not enough. They shouldn’t wait until 2010. They also need to spell out how their co-developed technologies can be accepted in a market where TSMC and IBM have set de-facto standards.”
Samsung Electronics, IBM, Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing, Infineon Technologies and Freescale Semiconductor have already announced their plans to start work on manufacturing 32-nanometer chips.
