Earth might see a narrow escape in 2029
We have seen it all in the movies. Asteroids coming towards the earth promising devastation of the kind we have experienced before. And they all have been tackled by one mean or the other. However, in reality it might not be it as now Earth has a potential close encounter set with a massive 1300 feet long asteroid. It has been named 2004 MN4 and has a small chance of collision with the planet earth in the year 2029.
This asteroid was originally rated two out of 10 on the Torino Impact Hazard Scale, which is used to rate possibilities of collision of earth with a heavenly body. This was serious enough, as no other asteroids have been given more than one rating in the past. NASA told the media about the latest reports they gathered: “2004 MN4 is now being tracked very carefully by many astronomers around the world, and we continue to update our risk analysis for this object. Today’s impact monitoring results indicate that the impact probability for April 13, 2029 has risen to about 1.6%, which for an object of this size corresponds to a rating of 4 on the ten-point Torino Scale. Nevertheless, the odds against impact are still high, about 60 to 1, meaning that there is a better than 98% chance that new data in the coming days, weeks, and months will rule out any possibility of impact in 2029.”
2004 MN4 is said to be bigger than the asteroids, which created the Barringer Meteor Crater in Arizona. It is even bigger than the one that exploded in Siberia in the early 1900s. NASA says the asteroid if it hits the earth would cause considerable damage but not on a global level.

The latest update from http://www.space.com has now pegged the risk of impact at 45-1. I believe the risk factor of 60-1 in your story should be updated.
The 60-1 impact risk was determined by NASA Dec. 24 - the latest impact risk of 45-1 is dated Dec. 25 9:47 PM.
OMFG I DONT WANNA DIE YET!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just another good reason to know Jesus!
45-1 hey - well if it is foudn to be on a collision course lets see a package of 10 nuclear warheads could be flown into it at 400 meters 10 standard nukes should at least alter the path it is taking - some bigger ones well they could probably smash it to bits
If it is found to be on a collison course it would provide a global technological challange as stated its a regional destroyer not a global killer.
Paul I don’t think knowing Jesus can or will help anyone in this case. Let’s be real.
The world is all ready headed for destruction - religion will beat the asteroid and squash all intelligence!!! Therefore, how cares if a dead planet is hit.
I hope it hits the Middle East when they just finish fixing their mess.
shpinktaar
you should keep your wishs for your country which already lost it is control
Yeah I like goblin’s nukes idea, just hope the rockets carrying the warheads don’t fail during take-off and come crashing down and destroy what we’re trying to protect.
What an appalling thing to say shpinktaar. Let’s hope if the asteroid strikes earth that it wipes out ignoramus’s like you than the world would be truly better off…
Can someone tell, which part of earth it will strike (in case)?
Shravan
with any luck, they’ll send a spacecraft armed with nukes to blow the thing up before it reaches the vicinity of this planet. perhaps it’ll miss us … by a few meters or so..
Do we have any results on which part of the world it will strike? or Is it too early to talk about that especially since we are still speculating whether it will hit earth or not.
How the hell can we avoid the asteroid hit is it possible to avoid it?Anyways 2029 is still far so there are chances that some miracle might happen on this front. Let’s hope so.
shpinktaar you should not be hoping and praying for the destruction of your fellowbeings that’s really rude. If you feel the value of a life is so cheap then please watch the devastation that occured due to the tidal wave. It might induce some sensitivity in you.
It wont hit the Earth man, 45 to 1 is not alot. Plus even if it does we will find a solution.
Does “ignoramusâ??s” have anything to do with ignorance?
shpinktaar…. Shut Up!
Latest NASA results: 2.700000000% chance of Earth impact or 1 in 37 chance
http://neo.jpl.nasa.gov/risk/2004mn4.html
And 5 “lower” potential strike possibilities. (it will go arround the sun with almost the same circle as earth.. that’s why we have several possibile “collision” dates).
Except: 2029-04-13
We also have: (5 level 1 warning 1000 - 100 000 chance)
2030-04-13 1 in 23,000 chance
2031-04-14 1 in 56,000 chance
2042-04-13 1 in 37,000 chance
2043-04-14 1 in 50,000 chance
2044-04-13 1 in 59,000 chance
And 35 times with a 1 in > 100K chance

For a list of other “asteroids” in potential collision course.
It might hit the sea, and cause a huge tidal wave like in east Asia.
Thank God we have the technology that enabled us to spot this asteroid early.
In South East Asia, tidal wave was caused thousand people dead. How about this asteroid???? Will caused more people dead???? Only God knowed…..
Use this site to see impact effects just play with the jpl numbers from the neo site
http://www.lpl.arizona.edu/impacteffects
All normal disclaimers for accuracy. Tsunamis not included but earthquake values substantially less than the 9.0 from my playing with the numbers if that means anything.
How old will William Shatner be in 2029?
This asteroid is the scariest thing I ever saw. I found a picture of it here http://blogs.salon.com/0001424/2004/12/27.html#a671 and it looks like a human face.
what are you all worried about there with be a nucleur war before before that.
Our preventive measures will probably ensure impact accelerated to 2026!
This is gonna be sweet….
shpinktaar::
I agree. :)
aw maannn. ill only be 58 maann. dude the technology in 10 years from 1990 to now has incredibly changed and gotten much more complex and better, amagine waht kinda technolody we will have in 2029. but this may be a good thing , you know, this may trigger a huge huge huge huge ice age, because of the dust clouds and global warming . so then after the ice age(which would be humungous) it will refresh the earth, and unfortunatly well have to start all over, lets save some books kids, we need to learn from the past.
i meant to say that ill be 39
This could be the best thing to happen sense the worse thing that happened to this planet… US! I’ll take two front row tickets, thank you.
never mind eh, you win some, you lose some, you then get blown up by a massive piece of rock travelling extremely fast.
This will solve the Social Security crisis.
… you are all beinging extremly ignorant… though most of you have a brain… while this crisis is forth coming, and therefore unheeded by some; it is a very serious problem… sending nuc’s out might seem like an intelligent idea now… but any debris from the impact could possibly ricochet back to earth, causing more damage then just letting the asteroid hit in one pice(i.e. in one area)… and there’s nothing wrong with wishing ill-will… as long as you know that there is always someone somewhere that is going to wish harder, more frequentlly, and problly has a plan to make sure that their wish is caried out…..
… in 2029 i will be… 41…Ashby.. unless you were… 16 last year… which would mean you problly have know idea what your talking about… you would not be 39 in 2029… nice try….
I am really scared!! i am scared of dying, i know its a whileaway but time flies. i would to know where it is going to hit and what the impact would be. we have evolved so much, can you imagine all that being taken away. some idoit said they couldnt wait, wait for what to be killed, watch people die…if your not afraid you should be.
If this astroid even comes anywhere near the universe and or within 10 thousand miles from earth, it will cause astronomical disaster like earth quakes and volcanos and it will be the end of all life on earth so hitting earth would be an easier faster death to all. If I see it geting ready to hit, I will go and try and catch it with open arms.
Not going to happen for 2 reasons. it’s too far out and even with that said, 20 years from now technolgy will be 3x better then it is today. We will be able to deflect asteroids from hitting the earth far in advance. NASA is working on a system that pulls the asteroid out of earths path by using a gravity device sheild. All an Asteroid needs is a little push and they will be out of earth’s path completely.
The more technology advances the more chances we will not only be able to catch an Asteroid coming towards us easier in advance, but we will also have the technology to deflect it.
