Wikia acquires Grub

Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales has released some more details on his under development project named Wikia which has been designed to provide an alternative to existing search engine services like Google and Yahoo.

Wales said that they are working on gathering the building blocks to start this new search engine mechanism.

He further said that Wikia has now acquired Grub which is basically a web crawler system. This would enable them to index the millions of websites on the web.

Wales added: “If we can get good quality search results, I think it will really change the balance of power from the search companies back to the publishers. I could be wrong about this, but it seems like a likely outcome.”

He had previously said in a statement that the Wikia project would combine the power of computer-driven algorithms along with human-assisted editing to provide a web search solution.
