IBM to start replacing their server data centers to mainframes

US based tech giant IBM has stated that they are going to replace 3,900 servers in its own data centers with 30 mainframe computers.

The aim is to conserve energy and to prove that mainframe systems are still alive and viable.

This would be one of the several steps to be taken by the company under their Project Big Green initiative which was announced earlier this year.

The company said that it expects to reduce its energy bill by 80 percent, and save $250 million in overall costs.

Bernie Meyerson, an IBM fellow, vice president of strategic alliances and chief technologist said in a statement: “In major metropolitan centers there ain’t another electron available. [A mainframe] eliminates the need to build more data centers and build power plants to feed them. A lot people can’t imagine that the dinosaur still has the economic advantages to deliver that.”
