U.S. Federal Communications Commission wants to make life easier for mobile users
The U.S. Federal Communications Commission has stated that the mobile service providers in the country would have to allow competing company’s subscribers to connect to their networks while on roaming.
They further said that the roaming facilities would have to be provided at reasonable costs to the customers.
FCC has now voted to make it mandatory to get the mobile service providers to provide roaming services on a nondiscriminatory basis.
It said that providing roaming connections is an obligation of commercial mobile phone carriers.
In addition, it also said that carriers must provide roaming to competitors for text-messaging and push-to-talk services.
FCC Chairman Kevin Martin added in a statement: “Consumers increasingly expect that their mobile phones will function where they work, where they play, and where they travel. Automatic roaming fulfills these expectations in a manner that is seamless and transparent to the consumer.”
