Qualcomm gets no relief from the Bush Administration

The Bush administration has revealed that they are now upholding the import ban on the phones containing Qualcomm technology which infringes upon Broadcom patents.

U.S. Trade Representative Susan Schwab said in a statement that they are sticking with their practice of declining to overrule the U.S. International Trade Commission. The last time they overruled the ITC was way back in 1987.

The US ITC had ruled that Qualcomm technology infringed on a patent that protected Broadcom’s technology to conserve battery power.

Qualcomm had responded by saying that they would ask a federal appeals court to overturn the ban.

Schwab further stated that they realize that the ban could possibly slow down the advancements in third generation technology in the country. But recent deals between mobile service providers and Broadcom would soften the impact.
