Nokia warns about overheating mobile phone batteries manufactured by Matsushita

After laptop batteries, its mobile phone batteries which are becoming a security risk for the common man.

World’s largest mobile phone maker Nokia has now warned that 46 million batteries used in its mobile phones could overheat.

The company is now offering free replacements to their customers. They are also in negotiations with battery maker Matsushita on which party would be bearing the cost of this replacement.

Nokia has also admitted that about 100 such incidents had been reported globally.

The company stated in its release: “Nokia has identified that in very rare cases the Nokia-branded BL-5C batteries … could potentially experience overheating initiated by a short circuit while charging, causing the battery to dislodge.”

Market analysts believe that this replacement would cost the two companies around 100 million Euros.

Jyske analyst Soren Linde Nielsen had this to say on the effect on Nokia as a result of this recall: “I think this will hurt Nokia’s brand a lot and that’s the most precious asset Nokia has.”

Robert Andersson, Nokia’s head of customer and market operations responded: “By reacting swiftly and responsibly, and by being fully transparent, we believe that consumers will continue to view Nokia as a responsible and trustworthy brand.”

The affected battery is the “BL-5C” model and it is one of the most widely used batteries on Nokia mobile phones. They are shipped with their low-end 1100 series phones and multimedia handsets N70 and N91 in addition to several other models.
