IBM and Sun Microsystems to collaborate on server technologies
IBM and Sun have been rivals in the OS and Server market since long. The two companies have now said that they are going to work together on server technologies as they aim to compete with the leaders in the market.
Sun’s chief executive, Jonathan Schwartz said in a statement that their partnership with IBM is a pretty comprehensive one and it “represents a tectonic shift in the market landscape.”
The two companies would now work together to enable Sun’s Solaris operating system to run on IBM servers.
This would enable Sun’s customers to move their hardware to IBM technologies without having to rewrite any programs.
IBM is also going to work on bringing Solaris to the mainframe.
Schwartz added on this collaboration with IBM: “Our view is when you make your products available on other people’s platforms, you just meet more customers, which just gives you more opportunities.”
