Variants of Cabir virus for Mobiles found in wild

Things are getting worse for the mobile users with advanced handsets running high-end operating systems. More viruses are being sighted in wild on a weekly basis. The latest ones to hit the news are variants of an old virus Cabir. Two new versions sighted in the wild come with features, which might led to wide spread between the mobile users quickly.

These two variants have been named Cabir.H and Cabir.I and they are updated versions of the original Cabir, which surfaced way back in June. Symbian Operating System is again the target for these viruses. They use a special format Symbian’s distribution file called SIS files and come in the disguise of security updates.

If user fall for the trap and runs the file, he is displayed a message saying Cabir and his operating system is modified to run the affected file when the OS is booted. The virus spread by looking for other vulnerable systems in the surrounding through the Bluetooth wireless connection. If the virus finds any affected mobile set in the range, it forwards itself in the form of velasco.sis file. This leads to a massive spread within a short duration.

Luckily, these new finds are not programmed to destroy data on the handsets. They just block the Bluetooth connectivity to original sources and eats up phone batteries. Handsets running Symbian Series 60 are affected by it if they are set in “discoverable” mode, which let them make connections with the phones in the surroundings via Bluetooth.

The bigger cause of concern for the anti-virus makers is that the source code of the new findings seems to be based on the original version. This means that the original developer leaked the code in underground networks, which led to these new viruses. If this is indeed true, we might see an even massive spurt in the number of viruses based on the same code.
