India could get hybrid cars from next year
India could get some hybrid cars running on its roads starting next year. The country already has an all electric car in the form of Reva and now we are likely to see automakers launching hybrid models in the market.
Honda Siel Cars India and Mahindra & Mahindra are going to lead this charge while Toyota and Ford are working on the possibilities to launch these vehicles in India.
M&M’s senior vice-president (product development), automotive sector, Arun Jaura said in a statement on their plans to launch hybrids in India: “As I talk to you, we are test-piloting Scorpio’s mild-hybrid variant and full-hybrid variant. We plan to launch them early next year.”
Honda Siel Cars India is working on plans to launch a hybrid version of City next year in the market.
A company representative said: ”We have plans to launch the Civic hybrid in India by next year. The cars would initially be imported as completely built units (CBU).”
Toyota wants to bring their highly successful Prius hybrid car in India but they want the government to give them subsidies so that these cars can be priced right in the market. Ford on the other hand said: “We will continue to monitor market demand in India before we launch any hybrid product.”
