VoIP based Mobile Phones

Voice based telephony working on Internet connectivity and Mobile Phones are two of the biggest markets in the world today. It was bound to happen that some company would think of merging these two technologies together. The result can be an incredible product, which offers the flexibility of a mobile handset at extremely low costing. Telecommunication giant Vonage have announced that they would be releasing mobile handsets, which would use wi-fi connections to offer voice over Internet based telephony.

They have collaborated with UTStarcom who would be manufacturing the handsets codenamed F-1000. These handsets would let users make calls from wireless hotspots and wi-fi networks inside homes and offices. The services should be out in the market by early summer. The two companies in the deal announced in the Consumer Electronics Show being held in Las Vegas.

Both broadband and VoIP markets are destined to become hot market in this year and wi-fi might just become the next big thing as the wireless networks and hotspots become more popular. Such handsets can be huge hit amongst the college students with wireless enabled campuses coz VoIP based calls would be comprehensively cheaper than regular mobile services.

Handsets based on this technology have been available in the past for corporate solutions but have been quite expensive as they are sold along with the network services. Plans of Vonage would bring them to the masses and at quite low prices. Critics are predicting the handsets to be priced in the range of USD 100-150 dollars. Company is yet to reveal their prices.
