HD VMD format to take on HD DVD and Blu-Ray

New Medium Enterprises is all set to launch their 1080p set-top players which would support a new generation of storage formats named HD VMD. VMD here stands for Versatile Multilayer Disc.

These players would go on sale on the online shopping retailer Amazon.com. They would also be made available to the consumer through retailing stores including Radio Shack and Costco.

The players would sell for around $150. This is amazing considering the cheapest players supporting either HD DVD or Blu-Ray format are priced much more.

The company claims that the media for these players would also be offered at cheap prices.

The HD VMD technology used in these players uses the red-laser technology which is used in regular DVDs.

The discs can hold up to 30GB on a single side and the media is stored at a maximum bit rate of 40 megabits per second.

The format also supports up to 7.1-channel Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, and DTS audio output.
