100 Dollar Laptop now costing around USD 188

The One Laptop Per Child seems to be making all the bad news these days. Sometime back there were reports that Intel was trying hard to replace AMD as the processor supplier for this device.

The latest information in is that the project’s 100 dollar laptop could now costs USD 188 to manufacture.

The most recent update before this news was that the device was expected to cost $176. The USD 100 price point is a long term goal for the project.

OLPC Spokesman George Snell said in a statement that several factors are involved in this rising price point for the device. Though they are working hard to make sure that it does not rise beyond the current levels.

Wayan Vota editor of the OLPCNews blog is however disappointed. He said: “Where does it end? It started out at $130, then it was $148, then it was $176, now it’s $188 - what’s next? $200? You have these governments who were looking at this original, fanciful $100-per-child figure, now we’re going up towards or maybe past $200.”
