Toshiba announces SpursEngine processor based on Cell technology

Toshiba has announced their new high-performance stream processor named SpursEngine which has been developed on the Cell Broadband Engine.

The Cell technology is already in the homes of millions of customers who own the Playstation 3 gaming console from Sony.

Toshiba further said that the processor would be showcased in notebook PCs at CEATEC Japan 2007. The company would also be displaying some other concept notebook products.

To show the power of this new processor product, the company aims to demonstrate real-time, 3D “face morphing” of hairstyles and makeup on actual video of individuals.

Toshiba plans to bring microprocessors based on this new technology in consumer products. The Cell broadband engine was developed through a partnership between Sony, Toshiba and IBM. It has been designed to be multi purpose and would start appearing in more consumer electronic products in the coming years.
