Advanced Micro Devices to launch Turion

AMD is going on with their war against market leaders Intel with their latest offerings in the form of notebook processors Turion. The company is planning to target the thin and lightweight mobile computer market with this series of mobile processors. This chip would directly compete with the Intel’s offering in Centrino mobile processor.

The processor should be formally announced by the company next week. The processor would be power efficient and replace the aging Mobile Athlon 64 chips AMD have in this market now. Most of the current offerings in the mobile market from AMD are geared to provide performance computing which otherwise is bad on battery life and heat generation. With this new series, they would be overcoming that disadvantage.

AMD would not be in the early stages selling these processors in complete kits as Intel does with their Mobile processors. This should give them a slight advantage, as consumers would get freedom to select from their choice of chipsets and other parts in the assembly kit.

The official lineup of these chips would be called the “AMD Turion 64 Mobile Technology”. AMD has been taking the initiative from Intel in the desktop and server processor markets with their latest processors but mobile market has been largely Intel’s domain.

Intel plans to turn back the pressure with their new offering Sonoma in the near future. The competition would be fun to watch.
