Facebook subpoenaed by the New York Attorney General

Facebook is one of the fastest growing social networking services on the web. The company could however find itself in some legal trouble as they have been subpoenaed by the New York Attorney General.

Sources say that investigators set up profiles on the service posing as 12-14 year old kids. And they were contacted by other members on the service asking for sexual favors.

They contacted the company and informed them about these issues. But Facebook apparently ignored those complaints.

Attorney General Andrew Cuomo said in his statement on these new developments: “My office is concerned that Facebook’s promise of a safe Web site is not consistent with its performance in policing its site and responding to complaints. Parents have a right to know what their children will encounter on a Web site that is aggressively marketed as safe.”

MySpace is another network which faced a lot of criticism for its lack of control on members joining the service. Looks like Facebook is now going to face similar troubles especially after they opened their network to anyone with an email id.
