McAfee’s Foundstone SiteDigger 2.0 to control Google Leaks

You know that search engines have become a little too powerful for one’s own good when companies have to develop tools similar to Foundstone SiteDigger 2.0. The latest update from the security company McAfee uses indexed information from the search engine Google to spot human errors, which might have lead to secret and private information leaked onto the Internet.

Companies and organizations can use the software to keep a check on information available related to them on the search engines. This update improved the software’s capabilities by almost six times to do the research bit. It provides seven different modules to look for in the indexed information available publicly on the net namely privacy, back-up files, configuration mistakes, remote administrator interface, error messages, public vulnerabilities, and technology profile.

Mark Curphey, director of consulting for Foundstone Professional Services at McAfee, Inc. had this to say about this launch: “While companies have become increasingly vigilant about guarding their corporate networks from break-ins, they also need to be able to account for potential human errors with information inadvertently made visible on the Internet”.

What I am confused about this software launch is that why would anyone need a tool to do what one can directly do with Google? If I want to check if Google has my telephone number indexed from somewhere… I can directly Google It and look for it.
