Toshiba displays SpursEngine processor powered notebooks
Japanese consumer electronics maker Toshiba has showcased a couple of prototype Qosmio notebooks featuring their SpursEngine multimedia coprocessor.
SpursEngine chip is based on the Cell Broadband Engine processor core which can be found on the Sony Playstation 3 gaming console.
Toshiba claims that this coprocessor has been designed to provide better video-processing capabilities for computers.
These are compatible with the high-speed XDR memory from Rambus. It runs at 1.5GHz and consumes between 10 to 20 watts.
It is not a replacement for the main processor inside a CPU but it enhances the video-processing ability of the computer itself.
