Mozilla, Arm, and MontaVista Software working on Linux UMPC

Mozilla, Arm, and MontaVista Software are collaborating with some other partners to develop Linux OS powered UMPC platform.

This platform would bring together chip design, operating system, applications optimized for the UMPC.

A UMPC (Ultra Mobile PC) is a portable device which is bigger than a smartphone and has capabilities of a personal computer.

There are already several UMPC products available in the market which are powered by Microsoft Windows OS.

Other companies involved in this project are Texas Instruments, Samsung Electronics, Movial, and Marvell Technologies Group.

Jim Ready, CTO and founder of MontaVista spoke about developing such a product powered by Linux OS: “You can attach to the Web and do e-mail and browsing without all the baggage of a PC and Windows and Office. There are Web-based alternatives to all that.”
