Google YouTube launches copy protection technology

Google has finally released their much awaited technology which aims to make it easier for content providers to block uploading of copyrighted media on the service by other users.

The search engine giant is facing a USD 1 billion lawsuit from Viacom which has blamed it for not being serious about stopping pirated media being uploaded on YouTube service.

However, the technology requires the media companies to provide them with all of their copyrighted content which is then analyzed.

This data would then be matched with future uploads on the service to check if its copyrighted by one of the companies.

YouTube product manager David King further said that this technology would not prevent the uploads of infringing media but any detected infringement would be flagged within a matter of minutes.

Viacom general counsel Michael Fricklas had this to say on this new development: “We’re delighted that Google appears to be stepping up to its responsibility and ending the practice of profiting from infringement.”
