New servers from HP and Sun to be turbocharged
Corporates have good news from the tech giants Hewlett-Packard and Sun Microsystems. Their new server solutions would be providing enhanced performance and speeds with help from comprehensive components upgrade. Both these companies would be releasing servers based on new chip designs and surrounding technologies in the coming months.
Hewlett-Packard would be implementing Intel’s Itanium 2 64-bit chip. While, Sun would be using their dual-core UltraSPARC IV+ processor in their new server lineup. HP’s new servers would be using the latest generation of Intel’s 64-bit processor, which features a larger memory cache, slight bump in speed and improved compilers. This alone would be bringing in a 25% performance improvement.
Initially HP would be integrating these processors in the midrange and high-end Integrity servers. Later by November, even the lower end servers would be featuring these advanced processors. HP would also be rolling out OpenVMS 8.2, which now supports both Alpha and Itanium processors. This would be helping out AlphaServer customers to move to Itanium-based systems.
On the other hand, Sun would be equipping its entire Sun Fire line of systems with the UltraSPARC IV+ processors. The new processor is based on a dual-core chip built on a 0.90-nanometer process. This improves the performance of the chip in network capabilities and security.
Looks like an exciting years for the servers as Intel’s 64-bit processor makes inroad in the server environment…
