Uruguay is the first nation to place orders for USD 100 Laptop
USD 100 Laptop might be costing around USD 200 now but it continues to remain in the headlines.
The OLPC project has revealed that the government of Uruguay has become the first major customer for these low cost computing machines.
They have placed orders for 100,000 units which would then be distributed to schoolchildren aged six to 12.
They are also reserving the option to place orders for 300,000 more units by 2009.
Nicholas Negroponte, the founder of the organization said in a statement that he is delighted by this deal. He added: “I have to some degree underestimated the difference between shaking the hand of a head of state and having a cheque written.”
