AOL to allow web users to avoid targeted advertising
Internet company AOL has now stated that they are going to let their users opt out of the program which tracks their web usage and display them ads related to their history.
These kind of advertisings are powered by Internet Cookies which are considered to be a threat to Internet privacy.
Advertisers claim that the system allows them to show useful ads to the web surfer. However, advocates of Internet privacy claims that this is yet another potential violation of privacy on the web.
AOL Executive Vice President Curt Viebranz had this to say on their decision: “Our goal with this program is to engender greater trust for targeted advertising by communicating with consumers in a more visible way, and by providing them more information about their choices.”
